The SSP Fall Auction fundraiser will be kicking off very soon. We are currently seeking items to add to our auction catalog and we hope you can help us!!

Do you have a new or gently used item to donate for the animals? If yes, we would LOVE to hear from you!! Items sold in previous auctions include t-shirts, jewelry, household items, pet accessories, artwork and artisan creations, DVDs and electronics, event tickets, collectibles and memorabilia items, etc. Please email us ASAP at info@savingshelterpets.com with an idea, or a description of the item(s) you wish to donate.

Business owners - We also offer opportunities to sponsor this event and advertise your business website in our online auction catalog. Contact us for details!!

All proceeds from this fall's fundraiser will benefit our Puppy Promises Program, which is in critical need of support. The animals urgently need YOUR help, so let's make this our best auction yet!! The big event kicks off on Monday, November 7 and runs thru November 21.

Transport 94 - "Dog Days of Summer" Run

The days are a bit shorter, the sun a bit less hot, and the kids are getting ready for the start of school. Like it or not, the end of Summer is upon us. And SSP has one more group of homeless doggies in Georgia that would like to kick off the Fall season in a safe no-kill rescue on their way to a happy home!!

This month, 42 puppies are hoping to make the big trip, but they need your help with funds. In addition to gas & transport costs, each pup needs sponsorship to cover a rabies shot, DHLPP shot, vet exam, deworming, health certificate, bordatella, spay surgery of their mom, and any other related expenses. And, because all of the pups this month are from our Puppy Promises program, the mommas of each litter will be spayed so they can't have more!!

Donations are tax-deductible and 100% goes directly to the dogs you see below. If you would like to designate where your donation goes, simply enter the dog's name (or litter designation) where it says [+] Donation Designation on the last page of your Paypal transaction.

The generosity of our supporters never ceases to amaze us – I cannot believe how quickly everyone pulled together to spread the word about Transport #91 and the need for sponsorships. Thanks to everyone's donations – whether it was $5 or $500 – there are now 31 puppies and 5 adult dogs on their way to finding their forever homes in the Northeast (including Holly Bear & Noble who were unable to travel last month due to heartworm).

Not only do your donations sponsor the vetting & transport costs of these 36 lives, but they also go towards spaying & neutering all the momma dogs to these puppy litters AND all other dogs or cats in their household .... prevention is key!

4 Special Puppies

Proceeds from this fall's event will benefit several special needs dogs currently in our care. Beau, Cosmo, Timber (aka "Dylan"), & Taz are siblings that were brought to us through our Puppy Promises program. Instead of entering the stressful & unhealthy shelter environment, their owners fostered them for 2 weeks while we searched for a rescue to take them. Unfortunately, these pups were severely under-socialized and not ready to find new homes at that time.

They have spent the last couple months in Pennsylvania where they have received a lot of love and training from one of our volunteers and a local vet clinic. They are slowly coming around and learning to trust humans, but in the meantime, this auction will help us raise the much-needed funds to help cover their extensive training & boarding bills.

Holly Bear

Holly Bear was rescued through our organization in February. Shortly after, she was diagnosed with Heartworm - a potentially fatal but treatable disease that affects the heart and lungs. As if this news wasn't enough, we have also learned that she has Entropion, a condition where her eyelids roll forward scratching her eyeball. Not only is it extremely painful, but it also impairs her vision. Both conditions are treatable but very expensive, so we hope to make our spring auction a success for Holly Bear and our other "special needs" pups!

We can't stop smiling about our fundraiser this past week. We were holding our breath, pleading for help for these doggies, not sure we could do it. But with a little over $900 donated in less than 2 days, we pulled this one off. We wrapped up the week with all bills paid and all doggies SAFE!!

We are extremely grateful to everyone who donated to Transport #90 (whether it was $5 or $500), cross-posted, asked friends & family to help, or even just prayed and sent positive energy. Thanks to your concern and your generosity, the fuzzy faces below are on their way to rescue and happy lives!!

A New Life for a Snowflake…!

Hello Readers!

We have good news to share! We've received a lovely update on one of our rescues.

Snowflake was a lovely little gal who rode on transport 85 last November. Thanks to SSP's wonderful supporters 28 dogs were moved to no-kill rescues in the Northeast that month.

An SSP Board member actually found Snowflake by chance, abandoned on the side of the road in Georgia. She was sitting alone on a desolate road with no houses, a road notorious for people dumping unwanted animals. As the car came closer, Snowflake dropped the Coca-Cola bottle she had been chewing and stepped out into the road

Unable to drive past, Snowflake went home with our Board member where she was fostered for a couple of weeks. She was treated for fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites. When lost pet flyers posted at gas stations, animal control, and the humane society produced no owner, Snowflake was put on the list to go north.

Now take a look at how Snowflake has grown!

She has been adopted into a wonderful home in New York, where, we hear, she has taken a great liking to snow!

Snowflake has been renamed Lilly, and is getting along very well. House and crate training were a breeze as were basic commands. Her new owner is being very patient with her as they go through all the steps of getting used to each other. Lilly has started obedience classes, and she loves it. She's really great with unfamiliar dogs and people- She's a charmer at the local pet store.

Look at that face! I was shocked, and really happy, when I saw the recent pictures.

Her adopter thinks Lilly will become an excellent companion, and perhaps even a therapy dog.

A big thanks to Lilly's new owner for giving Snowflake a second chance and a wonderful life. And a huge thanks to all of SSP's supporters who helped get Snowflake on the Transport. This is what your generosity becomes!!

March transport & why our supporters are the best!

WOW!!! As I sorted through all our emails this morning, I was overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters and the number of overnight donations we received for our March transport. Just 10 hours ago, we were still about $500 short of covering all our vet & transport bills. Thanks to our Facebook friends, blog subscribers, and other supporters we raised all but $44 needed to cover our bills. From all of us here at Saving Shelter Pets, I cannot thank everyone enough for being an angel to these animals!

The transport has arrived to the northeast and all dogs are doing well. Five of the husky/shepherd pups already have adoption applications in, and hopefully one of our Facebook friends, Mike, will get to adopt the black & white lab mix puppy he fell in love with through our blog!

From William, Ruthie, Sally Ann, and all the other dogs on this month's transport, thank you again from the bottom of their hearts!!

Hi Everyone! The weather is warming up, the days are getting longer...and you know what that means.... PUPPY SEASON! That's right, shelters are filling up with precious pups and often with their parents (here's the perfect place for a reminder to SPAY and NEUTER those pets!)

Here we have several litters and adults that are hoping to avoid the dangers of animal control and get their chance at living the lives of cherished companions. Can you help these furry travelers on their way to new beginnings this spring?

WILLIAM

William was brought into a local vet clinic after he fell off his family's 2 story balcony as a puppy and broke several of his toes. The family didn't want to pay his bill and told the vet to euthanize him, but the vets decided to keep him. He healed well, but has been stuck either in a small cage or cold concrete run since the summer and has grown up in boarding. He is super excited to move to the Northeast where he will soon find his new forever home! Update on Holly Bear & friends

Thank you everyone for your generous donations towards Transport #88, which is officially on its way to our rescues in the Northeast! :) All dogs were fully sponsored except for Holly Bear, who unfortunately tested positive for heartworm and was unable to travel today anyway.

Even though these dogs are all safe, we did fall short with our fundraising goal for Holly Bear by $190 and she still has previous vet bills to pay (not even including the additional $300-400 we will need to treat her heartworm later this month). If you have just a few bucks to spare, please consider helping us help sweet Holly Bear. We are a small nonprofit, run by a handful of volunteers, and it's a struggle every month to fund these rescue transports, let alone cover additional unexpected medical expenses. We committed to Holly Bear and we are determined to provide her with all the care that she needs and deserves.

For our very first spay/neuter clinic funded by the Pepsi Refresh Everything grant we won with your help, we were able to fix 26 pets in December 2010! 14 female dogs were spayed, 5 female cats were spayed, 2 male cats were neutered, and 5 male dogs were neutered. SSP wins $25,000 grant for spay & neuter

Last month, supporters from across the United States banded together to help Saving Shelter Pets win a $25,000 grant for their Spay & Neuter program through the Pepsi Refresh contest. The grant contest, sponsored by PepsiCo, distributes over $1 million a month to ideas which have a positive impact on their community. Each month, a few hundred grant proposals are selected for a total of 4 categories, with award winners based on the number of online votes each idea receives. After 2 months in the running, Saving Shelter Pets was able to finish in 7th place at the end of November, securing $25,000 in funding for their spay & neuter work in Murray County, Georgia.

Chatsworth, Georgia (and the surrounding area of Murray County) is an economically depressed area where the local animal shelter is forced to euthanize many healthy pets each week due to pet over-population. Saving Shelter Pets aims to significantly reduce the number of unwanted cats and dogs by proactively addressing the problem at its source: a large population of unaltered cats and dogs.

With the $25,000 grant funding from Pepsi, Saving Shelter Pets will host a low-cost spay & neuter clinic each month in 2011. The clinics will assist low-income families in fixing their personal pets at an affordable cost. In addition to low-cost clinics, the grant funding will provide at least one free clinic for feral and/or domestic cats, one free clinic for pitbulls, and will help supplement the funding needed to fix additional cats and dogs through the Puppy Promises program (also based in Murray County).

This spay & neuter work for 2011 will not only reduce intake numbers at the local animal shelter by preventing future litters from being born; it will also help to educate the community on responsible pet ownership and the importance of spay & neuter. Stay tuned for updates on individual clinics!

Gunther’s Story, Part 2

Back in May we gave an update on Gunther, a collie-mix from Transport #79. This poor pooch spent night and day outside in the dirt chained to a tree. Now to be fair, his owner had all sorts of animals ‘dumped’ on her doorstep, which created an overwhelming situation with no clear solution. Fortunately, with her cooperation, the combined efforts of three rescue/shelter organizations and a lot of perseverance on his part, Gunther finally got off his chain and found a home with a loving family in Connecticut. Hooray Gunther! Recently, more information on our happy update collie-mix has surfaced and is definitely worth mentioning…

Moving to Connecticut and receiving lots of attention has apparently done a world of good for Gunther. His family says he’s gone from 18lb (in April) to a whopping 31lb (as of August). And the timid, suspicious boy who initially shied away from his new family is now outgoing and affectionate with them and any other people he meets. This, I’m sure, is due to the inspiring dedication of his family to not only love and shelter him, but consistently interact with and socialize him.

It’s apparent that Gunther had made a difference in their lives too. His family ‘mom’ now volunteers weekly at the shelter where they found him. And his ‘dad’ bubbles with enthusiasm as he describes Gunther’s transformation. He praises Gunther’s happy demeanor and affection, and he credits Gunther with adding much enjoyment to the family’s everyday life. He is their constant companion on walks around town or during quiet times at home. They play a dog’s version of tag or keep-away in the yard. Gunther even gets on well with the other two rescues in the house, two cats.

An almost overwhelming amount of effort goes into the rescue process. Candidate animals are identified through volunteer/shelter networks, temporary shelters and vetting are arranged, destination shelters are identified, transportation is scheduled, and FINALLY the process of rehabilitating these stressed, confused and exhausted animals and finding them permanent homes is begun. However, I’m sure that every night when Gunther lays his head down on his cozy doggy bed beside his family, he is very overwhelmed with thankfulness.

Spay Day in October – 30 more pets fixed!

Saving Shelter Pets hosted our second spay & neuter clinic for 2010 this past Saturday, October 9th. A total of 30 cats and dogs were fixed, and by doing a low-cost clinic this time rather than a free one, we were able to reduce our costs by about $500 compared to the last clinic in February. This is great news as it obviously means that we can start fixing even more animals for the same price in future clinics!

While our rescue work is definitely important (and there are many happy pups in their forever homes who can vouch for that!), we understand the greater importance of addressing pet overpopulation problem at its source. Spay & neuter is vital in keeping cats and dogs out of the shelter in the first place. Murray County, Georgia is a very rural, low-income community and we hope to continue helping them with future clinics for as long as it takes to ensure that no more pets needlessly die at animal control!

As most of our supporters know, we are currently participating in the Pepsi Refresh project to win a $25,000 grant for our Spay & Neuter program. With our newly discounted vet rates, and the plan for more low-cost rather than free clinics, we now estimate that this $25,000 grant would allow us to host a spay & neuter clinic every month for 2 years –– which means approximately 720 animals fixed!

Rescue #84 was our latest success - 35 dogs and puppies, liberated from an uncertain fate in Georgia and whisked northward by transport van to safety in their awaiting rescues. Except for one thing - two of them didn't make the trip.

Remember the Puppy Promises litter of two adorable little Doxie mix puppies? Sadly, over the weekend one of them was hit by a car at her owner's house. Her leg was broken badly, she was in great pain, and she needed emergency surgery. When the owner delivered the heartbreaking news, needless to say, we were devastated.

We sent the transport van on its way, without these two pups. But what to do for this injured little girl? We are not in a financial position to pay for emergency surgery. We talked about humane euthanasia. But the vet assured us that, with the operation, her prognosis for a full recovery was very good. After being so close to freedom, we couldn't let her down when she needed us most!! And so, after much discussion and soul-searching, we decided to give this precious pup the surgery she needed to save her life.

Our brave little girl (who we've named Chloe) came through surgery just fine, and is currently recovering at the Dalton Animal Hospital in Georgia. She has a big nasty incision on her left rear leg, but the vet is optimistic that she's going to heal up nicely in the next few weeks. She and her brother Joey, who stayed behind to keep her company, should be ready to travel in October or November.

But the decision to save her life comes at a price - specifically, $600 for her surgery and stay at the vet hospital. (That is a super-special discount from the $1200 it would have ordinarily cost. Thank you Dalton Animal Hospital!!) Our Medical Emergency fund was wiped out in an incident this summer, and it is currently bone dry. Therefore, we must turn to you, our dedicated supporters, to help us do the right thing for this little girl.

Just a few days ago we were very worried that we would not have enough funds to make this one happen, but you all pulled through for us & the pups! Not only did we raise enough donations to cover everyone's vetting & transport, but we have a little extra leftover. :) This amount will go towards our upcoming "emergency dog" fundraiser to help pay for a little pup's broken leg, and a couple other special needs dogs.

Grant Proposal:
Chatsworth, GA, and the surrounding area of Murray County is an economically depressed area where the local animal control facility has a high kill rate and much of the local population knows little about the consequences of pet overpopulation. With $25,000 from Pepsi, Saving Shelter Pets can significantly reduce the animal shelter population in this area. We plan to conduct ten free spay/neuter clinics in the coming year (for family pets and also feral cats captured by local residents with our assistance). By doing this, not only will the turn-in rates at animal control be lowered with fewer litters born, but we will also be able to educate pet owners about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets and the basics of responsible pet ownership. Previous clinics of this type have been successfully run by Saving Shelter Pets, and all were very well-received by the participating residents.

Pitchfork 2010

Last weekend was our 5th year at Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago and may have been our most successful so far! Again with a prime location in the shade, stationed between the main concert stages and the beer tent, our booth saw a lot of traffic. Hundreds of festival-goers stopped by to share stories of their rescue pets, talk to us about SSP and our programs, browse through our rescue photos, and check out our new set of animal buttons.

Over the 3-day weekend, with most people donating $1-5 each, we raised a total of $575 in donations... proof again that every $1 makes a difference! :)

In addition to donations, we were also able to recycle over 1,500 plastic cups and bottles through the Recycle Tent at the festival, and in exchange, came away with lots of great incase products for our upcoming online auction in the fall.

Thank you to all our volunteers who enabled us to have a booth again this year! Depending on how many shifts were filled, we will also receive a $500–$1500 donation from Pitchfork in the next few months.... which means we should be able to sponsor another low-cost spay/neuter clinic soon! Yay!

Update, Thursday, May 27 - We really feared this one was going to end badly. A LOT of you stepped up to help this week, and we really appreciate that, but late last night we still didn't have funds to save them all. HOWEVER, as of this morning - we had JUST ENOUGH for everyone!! So we are delighted to tell you that ALL DOGGIES ON SSP RESCUE 81 ARE SAFE!!

So, as we always say here at SSP - Every dollar really does matter. :) And a sincere thanks to EVERYONE who helped in any way with another successful fundraiser for this lucky group of doggies!! Here is one more look at the precious faces that get a second chance at life, thanks to YOU!!

Gunther's Story - A Very Happy Update

Gunther is one of many dogs that has been helped by the Saving Shelter Pets Transport Committee. He went to rescue a few months ago, as part of Transport #79. His picture tells a sad and sadly common story of life at the end of a short chain. In the picture, poor Gunther’s surroundings look dusty and sparse, yet his eyes look hopeful. It would be easy enough to shrug your shoulders, think that this is just the face of too many animals that all share this type of existence, and then forget. Fortunately for Gunther (and many other pups), the dedicated supporters of Saving Shelter Pets recognize that each of these pictures is of a real dog with real hope for gaining the attention of a compassionate human hand, for even just a minute. And so, this past March, Gunther and the rest of Transport #79 received their funding for rescue and started on a new path!

Despite the limited care and attention he had known, and an understandably timid disposition, Gunther impressed the caregiver at his rescue facility with a special warmth and personality. You can imagine that, despite some anxiety over this new situation, his hope for lasting comfort and security was growing. His caregiver selectively found a family that she thought was a perfect fit for him, and finally Gunther went home! ♥

These days, Gunther is a million miles away from the dismal 24/7 life on a chain that he used to live. His family gives him companionship, training, affection and comfort. He’s learning to sit and heel, going for long walks, and getting regular health care treatments. These are the basic necessities that every dog (and everyone in general) deserves to experience. We’re delighted to see Gunther at home with a good family!

For all the Gunther’s out there that have gotten a second chance at a great life, we’re so happy for you and thankful that you made it. For all those dogs still waiting for your second chance, you’re just a rescue transport away from the happiness you deserve!
